The city is home to several higher education opportunities, including The University of Texas at Tyler, Texas College and Tyler Junior College. Besides academic curriculums, all three institutions pride themselves on helping to train a skilled workforce for the local economy.

UT Tyler, which joined the University of Texas System in 1979, expanded to a four-year institution in 1997 and now has approximately 6,000 students. Texas College, a historically black college, was founded in 1894 and has grown to an enrollment of nearly 1,000 students. Tyler Junior College, which opened in 1926, offers a variety of two-year associate degree programs for its 12,000 students.
