Production methods have changed drastically at the Tyler Morning Telegraph since it began publication in 1929‚ but one thing that’s stayed the same is the family standing behind it.

The T.B. Butler Publishing Co.‚ now in its fifth generation of family ownership‚ publishes the Tyler Morning Telegraph and its Sunday counterpart‚ the Tyler Courier-Times-Telegraph.

In November 2005‚ the company was recognized by Baylor University as the “Texas Family Business of the Year” for its commitment to the Tyler community and strong business/family values.

“That award was really meaningful‚ because we work hard to deal with the challenges we face as a business and as a family‚” says Nelson Clyde III‚ president and publisher. “It’s a challenge to keep a business going‚ and we’re in our fifth generation. We even have some sixth-generation youngsters who work here in the summer.”

Clyde has been involved in the business since 1969.

“I didn’t have any pressure to join the business from my parents‚ and I haven’t done that with my children‚” he says.

After college‚ Clyde worked as a reporter for a few newspapers in different cities “to see how other people did it” before joining his family business.

He became president and publisher in 1990. Clyde says he enjoys the newspaper business because of its spontaneity.

“Processes change‚ you meet a lot of interesting people‚ and it keeps you in touch with community members‚” Clyde says. “It gives you a broad view of your community and region. We’re committed to being the leading source of information for people in the future.”
