Tyler has the lowest city tax rate in Texas of cities with more than 15,000 residents.
Twenty-nine blocks of downtown Tyler are paved with red bricks, and this entire Brick Streets Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Tyler has its own oil refinery and sits on the outskirts of the largest single oil field in the contiguous United States – the East Texas Oilfield, pumping oil since 1930.
In 1985, the international Adopt-a-Highway movement originated in Tyler when, after appeals by local Texas Department of Transportation officials, the local Civitan chapter adopted a 2-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 69.
Famous area natives include Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell, actress Sandy Duncan, White House correspondent Sarah McClendon, and Dooley Wilson, immortalized as Sam, the piano player who sang “As Times Goes By” in the 1942 classic movie Casablanca.
